South Lakeland Highlights Tour

Highlights include bustling Ambleside and the Roman fort, Galava. Driving into the Langdale Valley via pretty Elterwater village gives a very impressive showstopper with the craggy mountains creative an iconic backdrop. Coniston Water is famous as the site of Donald Campbell’s ill-fated speed attempt in ‘Bluebird’, and is the home of the beautiful steam boat ‘Gondola’. Hawkshead is a picturesque old village with quaint lanes and quirky shops; Wordsworth’s old school is still here and Beatrix Potter lived nearby at Far Sawrey. Weather permitting the return is on the old car ferry which drifts slowly across Lake Windermere to the busy honeypot of beautiful Bowness.

North Lakeland Highlights Tour

Highlights include Friars Crag overlooking lovely Derwentwater with its Victorian rowing boats and graceful ferries. From here we drive into through the Jaws of Borrowdale (slightly less menacing than it sounds,) into Borrowdale Valley. Up and over Honister pass with a stop at the famous slate mine and down into the Buttermere Valley. A short walk goes to the lake shore and tumbling Sour Milk Gill and nearby red squirrels. Driving past Crummockwater we go to Whinlatter Forest with the osprey viewing centre and excellent Visitor Centre. The finale of the trip is ancient Castlerigg Stone Circle, in the midst of the inspiring Cumbrian fells.
