Vibrant Art Deco Paintings Celebrate The Midland's 10-Year Anniversary

We are delighted to be welcoming artist, Linda Page, to exhibit her Art Deco style paintings of the The Midland in different seasons, lights and times of day. She tells us a bit about herself and her passion for Morecambe and The Midland.

Award-Winning Designs

After qualifying in graphic design and illustration at Norwich School of Art, I did freelance work completing many designs and illustrations for national and international publishers. I also worked in textile design, doing artwork for Fruit of the Loom, Falmer, Wrangler and knitted design for Jaeger, Pinguin, Sirdar, to name but a few.

During the late 80s and early 90s I won two awards for my work, the first from the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers, the second from the International Wool Secretariat. In the latter half of the 90s I worked in Art and Design Technology at the Norwich School, and found myself designing sets and costume for many theatrical productions.

The Midland’s Glory Days

I moved to Morecambe with my family fourteen years ago and began to enjoy the experience of painting and illustrating once more. I remember my sadness at seeing the Midland Hotel boarded up and in such a sorry state. I had studied Eric Gill at Art School and knew of his amazing input in designing the interior and the wonderful Seahorse Sculpture on the exterior. I thought about its glory days when the likes of Noel Coward visited the hotel and Morecambe was a thriving holiday resort.

If you look around Morecambe there are many fine examples of both Victorian and Art Deco architecture. My father was an architect and encouraged me to follow in his footsteps… this was definitely not cool, but perhaps I should have done! I was both relieved and excited when the renovation of the hotel started. I find it hard to believe that ten years have passed since the Hotel re opened!

Art Deco Style

I delight in producing paintings of The Midland and find a wealth of images provided by the changing seasons and beautiful sunsets! I had executed some eight or so paintings already when I hit upon the idea of painting the hotel in an Art Deco style, the time that it was built. My ‘graphical style’ of illustrating seemed to lend itself to the subject! I am thrilled at the thought of my up and coming exhibition in The Midland Hotel. All the work displayed will be paintings of the building, at various times of day and different seasons of the year.
