Just you – the wind – the boat – and a beautiful lake. If you can sail you know the joy, if you can’t then why not learn. Low Wood Bay Watersports Centre offers both sailing instruction and a range of sailing boats for hire.

Sailing Instruction

Low Wood Bay Watersports Centre is a Royal Yachting Association recognised training centre and whether you are a total beginner or looking to improve your skills our experienced and qualified instructors can help. All of our sailing tuition is on a private instruction basis, so can be booked at a time to suit you and tailored to meet your requirements. The instruction is normally carried out in our modern and well-equipped Laser Bahia’s, but can also be carried out in any of our other boats or in your own boat if required.

The instruction can be on an informal basis or structured to meet the requirements of the RYA awards. Each of the adult National Sailing Scheme courses takes two days to complete and can be carried out following either the dinghy or keelboat syllabus. The Youth Sailing Scheme, for under 14s, is normally undertaken on a modular basis, but can be carried out over a couple of days if desired. The sailing courses we can offer are:

Wayfarer Sailing Dinghy Hire

The Wayfarer is a classic and ever popular sailing dinghy.

In order to hire the Wayfarer you need to be able to sail to the standard of the RYA National Sailing Scheme Level 2 award. Prices include buoyancy aids. Wetsuits can be hired for £4 and wet shoes for £1. Sailing area is limited to within sight of the Centre. Minimum age to hire the boat is 18 years old.

Laser Pico Sailing Dinghy Hire

The Laser Pico is a fun small dinghy, ideal for single-handed sailing or for a parent and child.

Laser One Sailing Dinghy Hire

The Laser One is a classic Olympic-class single-handed racing boat, fast and challenging.

In order to hire the Laser One you need to be able to sail to the standard of the RYA National Sailing Scheme Seamanship Skills award. Prices include buoyancy aids. Wetsuits can be hired for £4 and wet shoes for £1. Sailing area is limited to within sight of the Centre. Minimum age to hire the boat is 18 years old.

Keelboat Hire

Our keelboat fleet consists of a Hunter 19 and a Club 19, both stable and capable craft. They both have a basic covered cabin area and are both equipped with small outboard engines.

In order to hire the keelboat you need to be able to sail to the standard of the RYA National Sailing Scheme Level 2 award or the RYA Day Skipper practical award. Prices include buoyancy aids and fuel. Minimum age to hire the boat is 18 years old and you must be at least 16 years old to handle the boat under power.
