RYA Sailing Courses

Low Wood Bay Watersports Centre is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) recognised training centre and whether you are a total beginner or looking to improve your skills our experienced and qualified instructors can help. All of our sailing tuition is on a private instruction basis, so can be booked at a time to suit you and tailored to meet your requirements. The instruction is normally carried out in our modern and well-equipped Laser Bahia’s, but can also be carried out in any of our other boats or in your own boat if required.

The instruction can be on an informal basis or structured to meet the requirements of the RYA awards. Each of the adult National Sailing Scheme courses takes two days to complete and can be carried out following either the dinghy or keelboat syllabus. The Youth Sailing Scheme, for under 14s, is normally undertaken on a modular basis, but can be carried out over a couple of days if desired.

RYA National Sailing Scheme

RYA Level 1 Start Sailing

Aimed at beginners this course provides a short introduction to the sport of sailing. By the end of the course, participants will have a basic understanding of boat handling techniques and background knowledge enabling them to get afloat under supervision.

RYA Level 1 Start Sailing

RYA Level 2 Basic Skills

This course is the next step for those who have done a little bit of sailing but who want to gain more confidence and experience in what they have already learnt and is aimed at gaining the RYA Basic Skills certificate.

RYA Level 3 Better Sailing

The RYA Level 3 – Better Sailing course is an improver course designed to build upon the RYA Basic Skills and make the transition easier for sailors wishing to progress further through the scheme towards more Advanced Modules. By the end of the course sailors should expect to improve their boat control and sailing techniques.

RYA Sailing with Spinnakers

This course covers all you need to know about sailing with conventional or asymmetric spinnakers. Sailors will be taught how to rig the boat, gybe and recover one type of spinnaker, either conventional or asymmetric. How to sail the best possible course downwind.

    South Lakeland District Council

    Our boats and operators are licensed and inspected by SLDC (South Lakeland District Council) as required under the Public Health Act 1907, Section 94.
