RYA Youth Sailing Scheme

Junior Sailing Courses are specifically tailored for Under 14s and cover all aspects of the RYA Youth Syllabus.

The Youth Sailing Scheme is normally undertaken on a modular basis, but can be carried out over a couple of days if desired.

RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Stages 1 - 4

RYA Youth Sailing - Start Sailing Stage 1

The RYA Stage 1 course provides a basic understanding of sailing a boat, with some experience of steering and handling the boat in a safe and controlled environment. This is a beginners course, tailored to participants under 14 years of age.

RYA Youth Sailing - Stage 2

The RYA Stage 2 course is designed to develop a range of sailing skills and knowledge leading on to becoming a confident small boat sailor. Including more points of sail, tacking, controlling boat speed, relevant knots and some more theoretical aspects of sailing small boats.

RYA Youth Sailing - Stage 3

The RYA Stage 3 course covers Rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques, capsize recovery, sailing theory.

RYA Youth Sailing - Stage 4

The RYA Stage 4 course covers Rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques and maneuvers in crewed boats, recovering a man overboard.

The course dates show your actual activity days and the course will run from 10:00 to around 16:30 each day. There will be a break for lunch at a convenient time. Please arrive at 9.30 on your first day to book into the centre .

What to bring

We recommend that you bring plenty of warm clothing; quick drying fleece and thermals are ideal. You will also need to bring a swimming costume, towel, trainers or wetsuit boots, hat and gloves, sunglasses and sun cream, and a flask or water bottle.

Lunch is not supplied however those attending courses at The Watersports Centre are eligible for a discount of 10% off food at the Langdale Bar at Low Wood Bay. Alternatively candidates can bring their own lunch.

Age Limits

This course is aimed at those aged 14 years or under.

How to find us

We are situated at the northern end of Windermere, on the A591 between the towns of Windermere and Ambleside. We have ample car parking on site. The nearest railway station is at Windermere (4 miles) and the centre is served by a number of bus routes.

(The centre is closed for hire. Boat hire will be available on reopening in April 2022)

Our facilities include ample parking (free for customers only), changing rooms and showers, equipment hire and a shop selling refreshments and watersports equipment.

Low Wood Bay Watersports Centre is registered with The Adventure Activities Licensing Service (AALS) as licensed to provide specified activities under the following headings: watersports. South Lakeland District Council

Our boats and operators are licensed and inspected by SLDC (South Lakeland District Council) as required under the Public Health Act 1907, Section 94.
