The Armitt Museum

The Lake District is inscribed as a World Heritage site in the Cultural Landscape category, and The Armitt is dedicated to preserving and sharing this heritage through this fine museum, library and gallery.

Museum, Library & Gallery

Running (or should that be walking) from February to December 2025, The Armitt will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of Alfred Wainwright's Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells: The Eastern Fells, with a special exhibition developed by Chris Butterfield.

You can find out more about some of Wainwright's most famous fells through our Walking the Wainwrights blog.

The Armitt also boasts an impressive number of Beatrix Potter family’s books including a large collection of botanical watercolours and works that reveal much about the lesser-known aspects of her life story.

The library also holds her personal first editions of the ‘little’ books. The Armitt also boasts an important collection of artwork by Kurt Schwitters, who influenced much of 20th Century art, and who lived in Ambleside during his final years.
