There has never been a more pressing time to adopt environmental and sustainable practices. Our aim is to maximise our green energy output and reduce our carbon footprint, encouraging others to follow our initiatives to create a brighter and healthier future for all.
We recently attained the Greengage ECO smart gold award for renewable energy and approaches to sustainability and eco-tourism.
Our biggest project is the hydropower water turbine at Low Wood Bay. Fed from a fellside stream behind the hotel, it generated 209,269 kwh of the hotel’s green energy production in 2024. That has covered around 12% of the site’s electricity usage, reducing our environmental impact and saving us around £36,000 in operating costs.
A new solar panel project is underway and when complete is expected to generate another significant proportion of the site’s electricity.
We also run a combined heat and power (CHP) plant at the spa hotel, which generates electricity and heating. And we have six EV charging points too.
We have a biomass woodchip burner installed at Wild Boar Estate, plus solar panels and its own private water supply from a borehole. Lancaster House Hotel also has solar panels and EV charging points for guests.
Our guests come to the Lake District to enjoy the beauty of the natural environment. It is up to us not only to protect that but also to actively improve its wellbeing and the upkeep of the cultural landscape and its World Heritage Site.
The English Lakes Hotels Trust Sustainability Fund is supporting conservation and environmental improvement projects, especially in terms of planting trees. A prime example is the new woodland next to Low Wood Bay which is thriving thanks to the plantation of over 2,500 new trees.
We also made a £5,000 donation to The Lune Rivers Trust to create new woodland along a section of Ellergill Beck in Bentham, near the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
We run a Visitor Giving initiative which has raised over £200,000 for a range of local conservation projects. Our guests are invited to make a £1 contribution on their bill. They welcome the chance to help protect our beautiful Lake District landscapes for generations to come.
