Autumn Breaks in the Lake District and Lancashire

Autumn heralds the glory of colourful landscapes, misty mornings, berry-laden hedgerows, golden light and spectacular sunsets.

Just as nature prepares for the long winter months ahead, there is something very satisfying about booking an autumn break before the chill of winter sets in. English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues have great choices of accommodation, restaurants & bars, leisure activities and things to do and see in both the Lake District and Lancashire.

Autumn in the Lake District

Autumn, known in the UK as ‘Fall of Leaf’ until the 17th Century, celebrates the abundance and variety of trees. There’s no better place to feast on the kaleidoscope of changing colours than the Lake District. You don’t need to climb the highest mountains in the county to appreciate nature’s handiwork. We can recommend some beautiful walks from Low Wood Bay, or why not explore our very own woodland at The Wild Boar.

Without a doubt, the Lake District is a little less busy from September when the children go back to school. This makes it a great time to explore the quaint and characterful villages within the national park, with an eclectic mix of coffee shops, artisan shops, museums and craft workshops.

One of the best things about autumn is the prospect of a cosy candlelit indoor evenings, with great food and your favourite tipple. The Chefs at Low Wood Bay and The Wild Boar embrace the changing seasons, and scout out the best ingredients from local farms, fisheries and suppliers. From fresh game to hand-picked blackberries, squashes to orchard fruits, the autumn larder is handsome and heart-warming.

Autumn in Lancashire

Lancashire is a county that has it all - wide open spaces full of grandeur, a fascinating history with monuments to prove it, seaside promenades with fresh bracing air, coastal paths and a cobblestoned city. It’s also dubbed the food and drink county because of the numerous local authentic award-winning producers. Autumn is a great time to explore everything Lancashire has to offer from the big dramatic skyscapes to the tranquil countryside of a county comfortable in its own skin.

Guests staying at The Midland in Morecambe are treated to the most spectacular sunsets over the Bay – none better than the lightshow that is at its best during the autumn months. Lancaster House is conveniently placed close to the historic city of Lancaster, but also on the edge of the wild grandeur of the Forest of Bowland, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

The Sun Terrace restaurant at The Midland and The Foodworks Restaurant at Lancaster House pride take full advantage of the rich pickings of the country, and serve up food chosen from the best of the local larder, including beautiful cheeses, meats, vegetables and, of course, the famous Morecambe Bay shrimps.

Whatever activities you choose for your autumn Lancashire break, you will receive a warm welcome at both The Midland and Lancaster House. Sit by the large inglenook fire in the lounge at Lancaster House with a welcome cuppa after your day’s exploration, or sip a cocktail with an autumnal twist in The Midland’s Rotunda bar. Our teams are committed to making your stay as comfortable and relaxed as possible. Seaside, Country or City break, the choice is yours.

Lancashire in the autumn ushers in magnificent seascapes and skyscapes. It’s a great time of year to witness the spectacular starling murmurations at RSPB Leighton Moss or to discover the wild and untamed beauty of The Forest of Bowland.  Perhaps a city break is more to you taste, and Lancaster has much to offer.

The Things to Do

It’s always a good time to take a boat trip in the Lake District, and Windermere Lake Cruises offer some of the best. There are many photo opportunities, amazing Lake District views and historic sites to explore, as well as wonderful gardens and places of special interest to visit. Hilltop and The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction is a must for those who love the world famous tales of Peter Rabbit and friends.

As well as the historic sites around the city of Lancaster, Lancashire has a great theatre and arts scene with live shows in the Dukes Theatre in Lancaster to The Platform in Morecambe. Here are a few fun days out from Lancaster House, and  some stunning art installations on and around the coast. Don't forget to take the iconic photoshoot with Eric Morecambe statue on the Prom.

Festivals, Art and Entertainment

After the buzz of summer holidays, life takes on a different pace in the autumn. That doesn’t mean that there is nothing to do. Far from it, it’s the time of year that local communities organise festivals and county shows. It’s a great time to explore the culture of a place and to meet the locals in their home environment. Theatres are opening up once again, and there is a rich variety of art and creativity in both the Lake District and Lancashire. The Midland is co-host of Vintage by the Sea, a colourful retro extravaganza celebrating 20th century music, fashion, film, art & design.

It is very peaceful

Autumn is a tranquil time of year to enjoy a peaceful stay in idyllic surroundings. A getaway to the Lake District or Lancashire is a tonic for people with otherwise hectic lifestyles. Take time out to rest in the shadow of hills and mountains, or beside seaside, fells and forest. Good for mental wellbeing and good for the soul.
