Delicious and refreshing cask ales can be difficult to find in the Lake District.
So if you’re looking for a great place to enjoy a fine selection of real ales during Cask Ale Week, why not pay a visit to The Brewhouse microbrewery at Wild Boar Estate?
Cask Ale Week is an annual celebration of all that is good about real ale production and of course sampling a few beers!
Running from Thursday 18th September to Sunday 25th September 2025, Cask Ale Week promotes real ale and the unstinting efforts of its producers.
Backed by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and a host of master brewers, pubs and trade organisations, the event was established over 20 years ago by Cask Marque.
And with that in mind, Wild Boar Estate has set out its stall for a grand week of supping cask ales.
Head brewer at The Brewhouse Lukasz Zalewski and the bar team at the hotel welcome you to come and try their wide selection of real ales and even a pilsner lager or two.
Lukasz is highly experienced in real ale brewing techniques and in recent years has been the driving force behind an increase in production of Wild Boar Estate’s cask ales which include established favourites like Mad Pig, Blonde Boar and Hogs “54”.
Wild Boar Estate’s Mad Pig Ale is great if you want to settle in for a bit of a session or you’re after a refreshing beer to accompany a meat feast from The Grill & Smokehouse restaurant. It’s certainly a more-ish cask ale to enjoy.
Hogs "54" meanwhile offers real ale connoisseurs a hoppy alternative with hints of citrus and pine flavours. It’s got a nice little kick to it too at 5.5% ABV. And if you want a little bit of food to keep your feet on the ground, it’s a fine addition to a spicy dish or a platter of Wild Boar Estate’s renowned smoked meats or fish from the onsite smokehouse.
As light and zesty cask ales go, Blonde Boar is another that is hard to beat, especially on a sunny autumnal day. Fortified with New World hops and offering a clean bodied, fruity taste, it’s another brew to underpin a lovely little session with your friends.
The Brewhouse’s Crookweiser Lakes Pilsner Lager ensures that it meets the tastes of all beer drinkers, especially those hankering for a colder beverage to hit the spot. Blended with fine malted barley and maize and carrying the aroma of Lubelski hops, it’s a fabulous lager and might be the one to choose when you first get in after a hike in the 72 acres of wild woodlands on the estate.
From time to time the Brewhouse pulls out the stops for a special edition real ale to mark a big occasion. The 5% ABV Royal Boar came into production to celebrate the coronation of King Charles in 2023. And in a nod to the Royal Family’s close connections with the Scottish Highlands, this velvety cask ale is infused with whisky oak chips.
Overseen by the cheeky ‘mascot’, the Brewhouse Newt, the microbrewery team now produces around 800 litres of real ales every week.
The Brewhouse Newt’s moniker was coined in a nod to the Napoleonic wars when Admiral Lord Nelson commanded the British fleet. Legend has it that Royal Navy new recruits were known as ‘newts’ who, when chance arose, were fond of more than a drink or two. Hence the newt’s association with alcohol, or so the story goes...
Brewing cask ales first began in 2013 at Wild Boar Estate. And now the microbrewery supplies beers to its sister venues Lancaster House Hotel and Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa.
Lukasz’ responsibilities at the Brewhouse include quality control and monitoring batches of cask ales to ensure correct timing, the right amount of ingredients and ensuring the real ale brewing equipment is effectively maintained.
The capability of Wild Boar Estate to produce its own cask ales adds something special for hotel guests, diners and beer enthusiasts alike, especially as part of the venue’s Alternative Afternoon Tea.
This features a delicious array of mini savouries like fish ‘n’ chips, scotch eggs, pigs in blankets and burgers – the perfect additions to any real ale session! So why not book in today for a visit, a few home brewed ales and to raise a toast during Cask Ale Week?
