Low Wood Bay cannon has been proudly positioned overlooking Windermere for hundreds of years with an illustrious history.  It has sounded over the decades for many a celebration but is now a regular event to announce the start of every weekend at the resort.

The history of the cannon at Low Wood Bay

The current cannon was purchased by Tim Berry, one of the group's directors, in the mid-1990s. Reinstated in memory of Michael R.W. Berry – Chairman of English Lakes Hotels 1973-2004.

The original cannon which sat on the end of the private resort jetty at Low Wood Bay for hundreds of years and was first mentioned in Thomas West’s guide to the lakes in 1778.

Thomas West wrote about Low Wood Bay: “No other inn in this route has so finer view of the lake”. He also noted that “a small cannon is kept here to gratify the curious with those remarkable reverberations of sound, which follow the report of a gun in those singular vales".

This cannon would also have been familiar to the poet William Wordsworth, who lived nearby, and himself once said of Low Wood “A mile from the head of Windermere, is a most pleasant halting-place; no inn in the whole district is so agreeably situated for water views and excursions”
