Tap into the grisly past with a visit to Lancaster’s oldest town house and the infamous Judges' Lodgings.
Set in the shadows at the foot of Lancaster Castle, the Judges' Lodgings shed light on over 2,000 years of the city’s history.
The building itself dates back to around 1625. The Keeper of the Castle, Thomas Covell, was responsible for establishing the building. He was also famous for incarcerating the Pendle witches.
In 1826 the building was used as a lodge for the 'Red Judges' of the Assizes Courts. Adorned in their bright scarlet robes, the judges sat in sessions at Lancaster Castle. They determined the ultimate fates of alleged highwaymen, killers and other serious criminals.
