Williamson Park occupies a commanding position overlooking the historical City of Lancaster.
Its 54 acres of magnificent parkland can be explored via woodland walkways and broad avenues of attractive trees, shrubs and flowers with many quiet resting places to sit and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and magnificent views, from the Fylde coast up to the fells of South Lakeland.
A popular attraction in the park is the Butterfly House, formerly an Edwardian tropical palm house, which is now home to a plethora of exotic species of butterflies and birds in a rainforest habitat, as well as the odd meerkat, marmoset or tortoise.
Immerse yourself in this oasis of nature with tropical plants and a waterfall, whilst walking amidst an array of beautiful butterfly species, some brightly coloured and others superbly camouflaged.
For the budding biologist, glass display cases show the butterfly pupae with information on diet and life cycles, and if you close your eyes and concentrate, you may even hear the caterpillars munching away on the plant life as they grow.
Further entertainment for young visitors is provided by safe play equipment and there are plenty of lawns for games and picnics.
Williamson Park is also home to the iconic, Grade 1 listed Ashton Memorial which was commissioned by Lancaster industrialist Lord Ashton as a tribute to his late wife.
Constructed with Portland stone and steps of Cornish granite, the memorial was designed by John Belcher and completed in 1909.
Featuring a spectacular 150 foot copper covered dome, the memorial is a famous local landmark with a fabulously restored interior for hosting events, exhibitions and concerts.
The ornate sculptures around the dome represent Commerce, Science, Industry and Art. Those themes continue within, with an art collection of historic paintings.
There’s also a viewing gallery offering wonderful views across the Morecambe Bay countryside.
