Norman Long & Wendy Lawrence
'Multitude' exhibition of artwork by Norman Long and Ceramics by Wendy Lawrence Exhibition May - September 2026

Norman Long

Norman is a versatile painter, equally proficient in still life and landscape but is perhaps best known for his sensitive figure compositions. He favours subjects of people in public places such as cafes because of the fascinating relationships that arise.

Artistic Career

Norman Long (1976) was born in Preston and received his BA from Newcastle University. Early-career awards, such as the de Laszlo Award (Royal Society of Portrait Painters) and Artist of the Year (Artist and Illustrators Magazine) established his reputation, firstly as a portrait painter and then gallery artist. In 2008 he was awarded a scholarship for Postgraduate study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art.

Artistic Style & Subject

Norman’s light-filled oils manifest his love for colour and a sensuous paint surface. He creates vibrant cityscapes and figurative compositions, capturing relationships between people in public spaces. An enthusiastic member of The Northern Boys outdoor painting group, Norman loves working en plein air. For figurative works, he combines painting from life with observational drawings, invention, photography and memory to convey the veracity of life.

The New English Art Club have shown Norman’s work for the past six years. Along with countless solo shows, he has exhibited with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, BP Portrait Award, Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Prize etc.

Norman lives in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, with his American wife Lindsey and three young boys. He loves to share his expertise with beginner painters and is the author of a popular book on Oil Painting technique. He is a trustee of the Manchester Academy of Fine Art.

Wendy Lawrence

Wendy’s ongoing delight in texture and surface is key to her work.

Artistic influences & inspiration

Her ideas develop from geological investigation into natural forms found in the landscape and man’s influence on that through the study of archeological sites.

Continuous ongoing research and development of new forms, increasing the scale of work, and investigating new surfaces, glazes and oxides, is all part of her ongoing journey in clay.

Artistic Career

Wendy is originally from Clitheroe, Lancashire, but moved to North Wales in 1999.

She has worked steadily in her studio in Denbigh for over twenty-five years and has participated at many clay events, demonstrations and symposiums. These range from The International Ceramic Festival in Aberystwyth, Clay Art in Wales, Scottish Potters Association and many events throughout the UK and beyond — including: Keramisto Ceramics Festival in the Netherlands, Art in Clay at Hatfield, Earth and Fire and Ceramic Art London.

Wendy has been featured in the publications: Ceramics Art and Perception, Crafts and Ceramic Review. She continues to divide her time between making and teaching (Senior Lecturer at Wrexham University) and joint organising Ceramic Wales, an annual ceramic event in North Wales.
