This exhibition brings together ceramics by Stephen Murfitt with paintings by Terry Beard.
Both artists live and work in the Huntingdonshire Fens, which informs and inspires much of their work. Each has developed their practice over many years, evolving and refining their ideas.
Gavaganart, in Lancaster, works with artists from throughout the British Isles with an emphasis on artists from the North of England with many artists based in either Yorkshire, Lancashire or Cumbria.

Stephen made his first pots at Soham Grammar School in the 1960s. Then followed a foundation course in Art and Design at the Cambridge School of Art, followed by a degree in 3D Design specialising in Ceramics at the West Surrey College of Art and Design, Farnham. After several years as the ceramics tutor at Marlborough College, Stephen returned to his native fens in Cambridgeshire to establish the current studio shared with his wife and artist Terry Beard. From those early beginnings, Stephen has focused in more recent years on hand-building and Raku firing his forms and vessels. The making process has evolved slowly to allow for the development of new ideas. The work is a visual and tactile response to the natural and built environment.
Stephen’s work has been exhibited widely. He is the author of The Glaze Book published in 2002 by Thames and Hudson. His new book, CONTEMPORARY RAKU , published by The Crowood Press is now
available from all good book retailers.
Stephen studied Ceramics gaining a B.A. (Hons) in 3D Design, before combining teaching Art & Design with making his own ceramics. After many years as the Ceramics tutor at Marlborough College in Wiltshire, he returned to his native fens in Cambridgeshire to establish a workshop close to Wicken Fen, and recently moved to a former Methodist Chapel, converted into a studio and situated next to Woodwalton Fen nature reserve. This beautiful fen woodland environment helps to inspire the development of new ideas.
He has shown work widely throughout the UK, including London, Norwich, Brighton, St. Ives and York. Author of ‘The Glaze Book’ and ‘Contemporary Raku’.
Other artists whose work curated by Gavagan Art, that have had exhibitions as part of the Art in the Atrium gallery.
