A Warm Welcome at Low Wood Bay's Winander Club

Created Tuesday, October 8, 2019, by Tina Alexander

Introducing Chad and Katerina, our Hosts at the Winander Club.

We believe they have the perfect formula for making our guests feel right at home. Sharing many years of hospitality between them, Chad tells us how they met, married and moved to Windermere.

Fire and Ice

Katerina and I met in Greece in 2009. Katerina worked in an Ice Cream shop next door to a night club were I did fire shows. Ten years later we are happily married and have been at Low Wood Bay since October 2018.

Travel and Hospitality

Katerina has a degree in accounting but has spent many years working in hospitality in Greece. My degree is in ‘Eurythmy’ (movement art) and I enjoyed several years experiencing different cultures, travelling and working around the world.

Low Wood Bay Connection

Low Wood Bay Resort

I met Nevil, General Manager of Low Wood Bay and Gemma, his wife, when I was working as an ‘Animation’, doing sports, activities, kids club, at a Hotel they were staying at whilst on holiday. Nevil was reading a book on hotel décor and design and we got chatting about hotels and hospitality. I discovered that he was the manager of a hotel in England and that they were redeveloping and building new guest accommodation within the resort, soon to become the Winander Club.

Nevil said that if we ever considered working in England, to get in touch. At that time Katerina was working at a beach bar serving and taking care of guests on the beach. We were looking for a new challenge after spending seven seasons in Greece.

The Beautiful Lake District

Breakfast Room, Winander Club

At first we weren't sure if we wanted to work in the UK, but when Nevil explained that the hotel was in Windermere I knew it to be a beautiful part of the world, and somewhere I would love to show Katerina. We love the mountains, and to be able to live and work in the Lake District is a blessing. You are reminded every day of the real beauty of the world and life.

So, Nevil and I swapped emails and some months later I contacted him to see if his offer was still open. True to his word, here we are a year later at Low Wood Bay.

The Best View in all of England

Low Wood Bay Jetty at Sunset

Our favourite walk is up the hill at the back of the hotel where there is a path that takes you to Ambleside. It’s very accessible and we walk to town to get shopping and  a bit of fresh air and exercise. We also have one of the best views in all of England from our staff accommodation. And also from the Winander club of course!

Looking after our Guests

The team at the Winander Club includes Debbie and Mirka who host Reception, welcoming guests, helping with their luggage, and personally showing guests to their rooms and pouring a welcome glass of prosecco. Housekeeping do what they do best, making sure everything is spick and span for our exclusive guests.

Winander Club Team, (l-r Katerina, Mirka, Debbie and Chad)

The main responsibilities of Katerina and myself are, first and foremost, looking after the needs of the Winander guests. We serve and prep breakfast, place fruit bowls in rooms, keep the breakfast and bar area neat, tidy and well stocked. We also help with reception and run the club bar. What we enjoy most about our job is meeting people and having multiple job roles which keeps the job interesting.

Low wood bay has a wonderful family-feel team, and we often get help from other departments, and vice versa when we can help.

Winander Club – a Home away from Home

Winander Club Oak Suite

At the Winander Clubwe strive to give our guest a personal experience. A home away from home where they can relax and enjoy the complete resort facilities right on the door step. From Winander roof terrace you have some of the best views in England, if not the world. Our rooms are spacious, modern with beautiful décor to give it a homely modern warmth. We have fell view rooms with a wonderful view of Skelghyll Hill behind the hotel. Many of the Lime rooms have a bath in the room overlooking the fell, which give them that contemporary Victorian vibe

Our lake view rooms look out over Windermere, Old Man of Coniston, Crinkle Crags and the Langdale Pikes. We also have five Oak suites, two of which are set over two floors, with one having direct access to Winander Club roof terrace.
