August's Class of the Month - Dragon Boat Paddling

Our love for dragon boats came from taking part in last year’s Dragon Bay Boat Race. This event happens each year right here at Low Wood Bay. It is organised by Paddlers for life, a local charity for people facing cancer, cancer survivors and their loved ones as a way to relieve sickness and protect and preserve good health. The team at Low Wood Bay Health Club dived in head first,  many of us never even having heard of a dragon boat before race day. Despite that, we did well and finished second. This year we’ve decided to take our love for dragon boating and allow you lucky lot to have a taste of the pie!

Dragon boating is a totally inclusive team paddling sport for any age and any gender. The boat itself typically resembles a dragon, with a head at the bow and a tail at the stern. With a large crew of around 20 participants the propulsion comes solely from the Paddlers. The steering is controlled by the Helms man and rhythm kept perfectly by the drummer at the front. Originating over 2000 years ago the traditional Chinese boat has come a very long way from Ancient China to Low Wood Bay.
