A Brief History Of

English Lakes

From a standing start taking over what was then a small hotel on the shores of Windermere to setting up our culinary and hospitality academies to train the next generation of hospitality professionals, it’s been quite an eventful 70 years for our family run business.  Development, growth, progress and investment in our teams and venues has always been central to our thinking.

It all began after Norman Buckley, a renowned world water speed record holder on Windermere in the 1950s and the great, great uncle of current managing director Ben Berry, set up the family run business by acquiring the lease to run Low Wood Hotel.

Under its new management, the hotel welcomed its first guests in the spring of 1953.  The venue was already steeped in Lakeland history having first opened its doors to Lake District visitors in 1702.

English Lakes Hotels ran the venue successfully and so decided to buy the property freehold in 1958, following this up with the purchase of The Wild Boar just the following year.

Lancaster House Hotel was the group’s first green field site build and was opened in 1991.  The group has periodically owned, managed or run other hotels during its 70 years of operation.  In that time, Low Wood Bay has grown from a 30-room inn to a world class resort with over 130 bedrooms.

So with 2023 being such an important milestone year for us, we decided to offer 70 lucky guests the chance to enjoy our hospitality ‘on the house’.  The complimentary one-night guest stays will be spread across all three venues and will be based on a room booking and bed and breakfast for two people.

The first 15 winners – 5 for each venue - will be drawn from a history quiz running until the end of February.
