Beetham School's New Outdoor Facilities

At English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues, we take great pride in the chance to support our local community and help raise funds for projects which can make a difference.

Supporting Our Local Community With School Field Project

So when we were approached by Beetham C of E Primary School to see whether we could help them with some of their development plans, we undertook a visit to see the head teacher and consider what we could do.

The result was a £3,500 donation from our Sam’s Club Charity to help the school complete the installation of a composting toilet and outbuilding alongside its sports field.

The addition of the outdoor composting toilet means that the school’s teachers can deliver a greater variety of lessons using the recreational field and for longer periods with minimal disruption when pupils need to go back into the main building to use the facilities.

Maximising Our Corporate social Responsibility Commitments

The project has also involved environmental and educational themes with the school working with us to certify the composting toilet under the Toilet Twinning partnership between development charities Cord and Tearfund.  The facility will be paired with a purpose-built latrine in a third world country to give an overseas community access to clean water and sanitation.

"As a small school on the edge of Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding National Beauty, we nurture a friendly and caring environment and we’re constantly looking for ways to improve our grounds and facilities for our students. We’re very grateful to English Lakes Hotels for getting involved in the project and making such a significant donation.  The Toilet Twinning idea has also provided a strong, caring educational theme on overseas development and sanitation for the students to consider."
Abi Johnson - Head Teacher at Beetham C of E Primary School

English Lakes Hotels joined forces with Toilet Twinning in 2014, with facilities across our hotels displaying certificates which bear photographs of their twinned latrines as far afield as Columbia, Cambodia and Nepal.

"We were invited to tour the school and were really impressed with their plans to improve their facilities.  The composting toilet and outbuilding was an ideal project to help fund as it dovetails with our commitment to the Toilet Twinning initiative which provides clean water to poor communities and helps reduce spread of disease and premature deaths."

Charity Begins At Home

The Sam’s Club Charity, which supports local charities and good causes, has also been instrumental in breathing new life into a local children's playpark.  A £20,000 donation was made to the redevelopment of the Queen’s Park play area in Windermere which helped fund the installation of its popular bike ‘pump’ track.

The hotel group also supports environmental projects and community initiatives such as the work to provide wheelchair access at Castlehead Tarn.

"Dear Mrs Berry, English Lakes Hotels and Sam’s Club, I am writing to thank you for your generous donation to build the school’s composting toilet. It has already shown to be an asset of the school and now enables us to use the school field for forest school sessions. This develops the children’s understanding of the environment they live in; as well as explore the impact and sustainability of our school and community. Further to this, the younger children are now able to use the field on a more regular basis including lunch times. This means that they are engaging in higher quality lunch time play and can increase their socialisation with the rest of the school. The twinning of our toilet has also encouraged children to think about other places around the world and the facilities that we have in comparison. This has enabled the children to be able to see how they can have a positive impact on other countries and continue to develop their understanding of sustainable support. Thank you again for your generosity; we look forward to all the other activities that we can now do with the addition of the toilet on our field. Yours sincerely,"
